Since this is a safe space, I’m going to go ahead and admit that I didn’t used to know what a toner is! I only actually started using a toner at the start of this year. I was never big on skin care, to be honest again… Until this year I’d just clean my face with bathing soap, apply Vaseline and put on cheap Dubois makeup and I was ready to go (if I think of it now, I must have looked like a hot mess!).
Not that my skin was bad, but it wasn’t good either… I had these tiny rashes (still do sometimes) that just never seemed to go away. They just set up camp on my forehead and cheeks. As I started watching skin-care routine videos, trying to get clear skin, I found out that everybody always had a toning step. So I got curious about what toning is and why I should tone.
Let me tell you something: skin care is a necessity, so if you want good skin you must work for it, take good care of it and be consistent. After making the mistake of buying skin care products just because they worked on an influencer, I started doing my research. This is very important, as people have different skin types so there are different products for each type of skin.
Being a beginner in skin-care, I learnt that the three main steps to follow are CLEANSE + TONE+ MOISTURIZE. Simple steps for a simple skin-care routine. I understood the cleansing part and the moisturizing part, but I just didn’t know what the toning part was and why I should do it… So here are some of the reasons why toning is important.
1.it balances skin pH levels, which helps skin to be less prone to oiliness and infection.
2. it helps calm and balance the skin after cleansing and prepares you for the next step.
3. it helps soothe, nourish and hydrate skin, creating a more vibrant and smoother appearance.
4. it shrinks pores and tightens cell gaps, reducing penetration by impurities.
5. it helps remove the left-over dirt that the cleanser didn’t clear.
How to apply toner
After cleansing your face, add a small amount of toner to a soft cotton ball or pad and gently wipe your face with it.
